*** You have 30 calendar days from the day you move into Alabama to register your vehicle. ***

If you are a new resident, you can register your vehicles in Alabama prior to obtaining an Alabama Driver’s License if your out of state driver’s license is valid.

Registering Out of State Vehicles

Vehicles with a Lien

The following items will be needed:

  1. Copy of the original Certificate of Title, or an Electronic Copy.
    1. Some states send the valid original title to the owner and not to the lien holder, applicants who meet this criteria must surrender the title at the time of application for an Alabama title.
  2. Last or current out of state registration.
  3. Valid license for all parties.
  4. Proof of Alabama insurance containing VIN, NAIC number, policy number, and policy coverage period.
  5. Proof of residency in Blount County (auto insurance, bank statement, utility bill, property tax bill (homestead), voter registration card, etc.)

Vehicles without a Lien

The following items will be needed:

  1. Original Title
  2. Last or current out of state registration.
  3. Valid license for all parties.
  4. Proof of Alabama insurance containing VIN, NAIC number, policy number, and policy coverage period.
  5. Proof of residency in Blount County (auto insurance, bank statement, utility bill, property tax bill, voter registration card, etc.)

Registering a Vehicle from Another County in Alabama

If you have moved from another county, action is required when your tag is due to be renewed.  During your renewal month, please come into one of the local offices with either your vehicle registration or renewal notice from the former county, along with driver license or state issued ID (for each owner) and proof of Alabama insurance.  Proof of residency in Blount County will also be required.
