SPECIALTY PLATES:
There are many specialized license plates available, and the selection is too numerous to list. You may narrow the search by choosing a specific type of plate using the drop-down menu provided on the site.
PERSONALIZED PLATES:
A personalized plate can be acquired for most private passenger, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, buses, campers, or antique vehicles. The combination of letters/numbers requested must not conflict with the regular number system and depending on the design, some personalized plates may only allow a maximum of 5 letters/numbers, others could allow 6 or 7 letters/numbers. Special characters are not allowed, and the letter ‘O’ is not allowed on personalized plates. If the letter ‘O’ is entered it will be replaced with the number zero (0). All personalization is subject to State of Alabama Revenue Departments approval.
The fee for a personalized tag is $50.00 each year over and above your standard issuance fee and property tax assessment (ad valorem). Issuance of a new metal plate is subject to a $5.00 issuance fee. If the personalized tag is stolen or lost, you can apply for a replacement tag and decal at a cost of $2.00. For tags that have been stolen, a copy of the police report is required.
You can save time by visiting the Alabama Department of Revenue website to see if your personalization choice is available using this link. If your request is approved by the Alabama Department of Revenue, personalized license plate reservations will be held for five business days from submission of the request. Reservations must be redeemed at the registrant’s licensing official’s office within this timeframe, or the reservation will be forfeited. A registration receipt will be provided as well as a 60-day temporary tag (no charge for the temporary tag). After the license plate is manufactured, it will be mailed directly to your address usually within six (6) to eight (8) weeks.
