Utility Trailer Information
Code of Alabama 1975, 40-12-240 defines a utility trailer as a trailer primarily designed to be drawn by a passenger car or pickup truck, including but not limited to:
- luggage trailers
- other small trailers of similar size and function
- does not include boat trailers
Basic registration requirements:
- Completed bill of sale
- No title will be issued on bumper pulled trailers
- Insurance is not required
Semi/Gooseneck Trailer Information
Code of Alabama 1975, 40-12-252 applies to, but is not limited to, the following:
- Truck Trailers
- Semitrailers
- Tractor Trailers
Basic registration requirements:
- Models 20 years or newer: completed bill of sale and title documentation (title, title application or a manufactures certificate of origin)
- Models older than 20 years: completed bill of sale
- Insurance is not required
Travel Trailer Information (including campers & pop up campers):
Code of Alabama 1975, 40-12-252 requires that Alabama residents register privately owned travel trailers.
Basic registration requirements:
- Models 20 years or newer: completed bill of sale and title or title application
- Models older than 20 years: completed bill of sale
- Insurance is not required
Homemade Trailer Information
Basic registration requirements:
- Manufacturer must provide the buyer with a bill of sale including year, make, model, length and VIN number that the manufacturer assigns to it
- Insurance is not required
